The Ford Focus RS was supposed to be launched later this year, but the latest information shows that the brand's hot-hatch will be delayed until 2022. The reason seems to be the development of a new hybrid power system that reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

Initially, Ford engineers predicted a mild-hybrid configuration with a 48-volt electrical system, but this measurement is not enough to keep the average 95 g/km emissions level at standard level. Therefore, it will be necessary to develop a new power system, this time we are talking about a full hybrid system.
"We expect our team of engineers to find a solution for the drivetrain, and that's not easy given the new fleet-level pollution regulations," a Ford spokesperson told Autocar. "The powertrain of the mild-hybrid will be insufficient," the same source said.

It looks like Ford will be calling the upcoming Focus RS an optimized version of the hybrid powertrain on the Kuga. It is equipped with a 2.5-liter heat engine that runs in an Atkinson cycle.
